{"id":80,"date":"2008-06-27T18:36:49","date_gmt":"2008-06-27T23:36:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brianschettler.com\/blog\/?p=80"},"modified":"2008-07-09T23:46:31","modified_gmt":"2008-07-10T04:46:31","slug":"man-sets-fire-to-bmw-in-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianschettler.com\/blog\/?p=80","title":{"rendered":"Man sets fire to BMW in protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I saw this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2008\/WORLD\/europe\/06\/27\/germany.gas.ap\/index.html?eref=rss_latest\">story about a man torching<\/a> his BMW to protest high gas prices.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Bavarian man, whose name was being withheld because he has not been charged with a crime, told police that gas prices were so high he could no longer afford to drive the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>As in many countries, <span class=\"cnnInlineTopic\">gasoline prices<\/span> have risen steadily in <span class=\"cnnInlineTopic\">Germany<\/span>; a liter of regular gasoline now costs about euro 1.55, or $9.40 per gallon.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take note of two things here:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Protesters are idiots. What does this man gain by burning his car? Do gas prices go down now? Do the gas stations suddenly say, &#8220;Well gee willickers, this man burned his car, I guess we better drop the price 30 cents at the pump.&#8221; ? Why bother, because this man doesn&#8217;t have a car anymore. He also could have sold the car to pay for many years worth of public transportation.<\/li>\n<li>Who is to blame for the price of gas? It&#8217;s $9.40\/gal. Unleaded gas is <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/data\/commodities\/\">trading<\/a> for $3.51 right now. Which means that $5.89 per gallon goes to taxes.
